The Village began with a simple vision in 1949, when developer Clarence E. Duffner, Sr. purchased forty acres of open land and began building what he hoped would become a welcoming residential community. Legend has it that the name “The Village” was chosen while Duffner was visiting his general store, simply called The Village Store.
The name reflected the close-knit, friendly atmosphere he hoped to create—a place where neighbors knew one another and families could put down roots. Additional neighborhoods were developed by builder Floyd Harrison, and the community officially incorporated as a city in 1959. Today, The Village is home to approximately 9,300 residents and continues to embrace the neighborhood character that inspired its name more than seven decades ago.
